Kim's take on the recent State District Conference

Kim Stokes spoke on his experience at the 2021 Rotary District Conference.

He commended District Conferences as a way of “recharging your Rotary battery”.

Conference highlights are always the keynote speakers. Amongst a range of excellent speakers, two of the standouts that book-ended the conference were Michael Chaney (AO) and Nadia Mistsopoulos.

Mr Chaney, currently Chair of Wesfarmers, spoke on corporate responsibility and while making a point that shareholders are the company’s priority (that’s why they have invested), the company can still provide significant fiscal and social returns to the community.  Wesfarmers is ranked No. 1 in this respect in Australia and ranks in the world’s top 20.

Ms Mitsopoulos spoke in her role as a journalist in print, radio and TV over the last 30 years. She currently heads up ABC morning radio. Two major themes of the conference were homelessness and mental health and Nadia delivered passionately on the latter. In an emotional address Nadia told of losing her father, a successful small business owner, to suicide. Nadia is now a director on the board of crisis support agency Lifeline.

Next year’s District Conference is being held in Kalamunda and Kim encouraged club members to be in attendance.
