Cyclone Seroja Recovery |
Guest Speaker Samantha Edwards is introduced by PP Phil Martin. Sam is a Cyclone Seroja Recovery Officer working for the Dept of Fire and Emergency Services. She covers the Shires of Northampton and Chapman Valley. She is originally from the Wheatbelt of WA. Sam backgrounds the development of TC Seroja telling us that 150 lives were lost in Indonesia before the cyclone arrived in Australian waters. The work she is doing along with other TC Seroja Recovery Officers should be finished in the next twelve months. Hers is not a permanent DFES position.
Cyclone Seroja hit the Midwest on April 11, 2021, having already caused death and destruction in Indonesia. It hit landfall at Kalbarri with destructive winds, moving inland affecting 16 local government areas though the Midwest, Gascoyne and Wheatbelt. 133,000 Km2 area was affected from Kalbarri Northampton, Morawa, Dalwallinu, and Merredin. Had the cyclone tracked 40km south, Geraldton would have faced devastation! Recovery form such an event involves not just the built environment, but also the natural, human, and social and economic and financial environments. With the help of local government, other agencies and support services and community philanthropy, Local Recovery hubs have been established. These are in Kalbarri and Northampton together with Nabawa Recovery Support Outreach, Yuna Recovery Support Outreach, Geraldton Recovery Hub, Mullewa Recovery Support Outreach, Morawa Recovery Hub, Mingenew Recovery Support Outreach, Perenjori Recovery Support Outreach |
