Dr Des Lehmann | Guest Speaker |
Bob Mercer introduced Dr Desmond Lehmann to the club. He is the Community Relations Manager for Western Power. Des is a charted Electrical Engineer who also holds a doctorate in Business Management and Public Administration, and various other Master’s Degrees and diplomas! His current role is Community Relations Manager for Western Power, and he is responsible for managing stakeholder relations and community expectations for the South West. Western Power transmits energy, it does not generate it, and one of the challenges is to provide cost effective power to remote locations. He provides the reality check between community expectations and what is technically possible. As a Government corporation, Western Power must get some return for its dollars spent! “Smart Solutions” looks at when and how power is consumed, to help spread the load of demand away from peak periods. A lot of appliances, eg pool pumps, hot water systems can be run off peak. The use of “Smart Meters” will allow consumers to work out how their power is consumed. Des has a keen interest in renewable energy and alternative fuel sources such as gas boosted solar hot water, and photo-voltaic cells which can provide electricity from the sun. Such panels, stored on the roofs of houses have the capacity to feed unused power back into the grid or be stored in Hi tech lithium batteries. Other possibilities for home renewable energy sources include micro wind turbines, which would be great in Geraldton! Now if we could just get all this past the council…..!
