Looks like fun!

RYLA 2016

Logan McGregor was our representative at Ryla and he outlined some of his experiences today. The Rotary Youth Leadership Award is a residential training program where young people are taught leadership skills, teamwork and resourcefulness to help them in their future careers and work well with other people.

Logan was born in Bunbury and grew up in Karratha, Dunsborough and then finally Geraldton, experiencing heat, cold and now wind! He was Head Boy at Geraldton Secondary College and is in his “Gap Year” before heading off to Uni, to study something!! He has played water polo and is training with Brigades Football Club reserves!!

Logan went on to outline some of his experiences at RYLA, including making sure he had enough toilet paper for the week! The event was held at the Bickley Recreation Camp, which has a gorgeous reservoir! In teams they constructed a mode Eifel Tower out of straws using the different leadership styles, democratic, autocratic and laisse-fare! (I think the democratic won!-ed) Their acting skills were tested in the “Queen of Hearts” game where they had to “drop dead” at short notice. (At this point Bianca demonstrated this much to the excitement of Stabba, who was looking to test his CPR skills!-ed)

Tower of Faith.... brrr!

Team work in action!

Other activities included Salsa dancing, orienteering and building and climbing the “Tower of Faith” made from milk crates!! They were taught to face their fears, from heights to public speaking! There was a four mile hike and a challenge to build rafts to race in the lake! They survived an elephant ant attack, and did volunteer work, either in the garden, café or shop, and finished with a cocktail party! No wonder they were exhausted at the end!

Logan thanked Rotary and our club for a memorable experience and feels he has become a better person for it. Tony Emmott thanked him for his presentation in the ususal way we would expect from him!
